Sicily — and much of the Southern Italian mainland — has been colonized, occupied and ruled by a number of different peoples and civilizations over the millenia — the Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Moors (North Africans), Norsemen, Spanish, to name a few — and each of these different peoples settled there, married into the local population and added their contribution to the local gene pool. So Sicilians and southern Italians are an ethnic mix, and not all of their ancestors were lily-white (the Moors and Arabs, for example).

Sicily is close to Africa, but we’re white. Some (especially italians of southern decent) refer to non-italian whites, specifically americans, as Madigans. Which is used to differentiate ourselves from the non-italians. But bottom line is we’re still white.

first of all Italians are really Latin. second of all you have to know the history of Sicily. It has been fought over and conquered many times. Some of these conquering nations, have been Turkey, who are similar to Arabs in complexion. And the Moors who are similar to africans in complexion. Because of this even the rest of Italy looks down on Sicily. My mother and my grandfather on my dads side never got along. because my mother is Sicilian and My grandfather comes from Umbia which is slightly North of Rome. My mom is olive complexion with dark eyes and dark hair, Where as my grand father is light skinned with very light brown hair and green eyes. and my Aunt from my father side is blonde with green eyes. To this day in sicily one of the greatest insult is to be called a turk which means your a back stabber or to be called a Mameluke. a very tough warrior sect from turkey. Me I have the best of both worlds. I am moderately dark complexion with dark brown hair and green eyes. I go along with the white bread description unless asked then I tell people that I am Latin. and prefer that. It wasn’t always like this in America tho. back in the early part of the 19th century Hollywood refer ed to Italian actors as Latin lovers and the derogatory name DAGO is latin for dark

I think the Nordic definition of whiteness is responsible. If the scientific
definition is accepted, all people with certain skeletal characteristics
fall in their right racial category. But some people stupidly reduce the
"whites" only to Nordics, and exclude the southern Europeans, middle
easterners, north Africans,Hispanics,…and in seconds see themselves
as a minority, which shrinks in number daily. They they begin to mourn
and cry like babies. No other race does the same to its fellow members.
Have you ever seen an African-American deny blackness of e.g south
American blacks?or a Japanese deny mongoloidness of a Thai?! we look
like dinosaurs which try to extinct themselves as soon as possible!!!
